Kalooki Strategy - Drawing

Drawing the right cards is vitally important in Kalooki, but unless you've got a crystal ball, how do you know which are the right cards?

Put simply, you don't. But you can follow 'best practice' to increase the odds in your favour.

Rule 1 - draw from the stock pile, not the discard pile

Every time you draw from the discard pile, you're giving information to your opponents about which cards you have and which cards you're looking for. The best players will use this information against you and take you for every point you have!

Rule 2 - Don't pick up a discarded card unless you can use it

Only draw a discarded card if you can use it straight away to complete a set or a run (ie at least three cards) and even then be careful early in the game (see rule 3 below).

NB When playing Kalooki 40 remember that if you draw from the discard pile, you MUST then lay down one or more melds.

Rule 3 - Expect your opponents 1st and 2nd discards to be 'bait'

This is an extension of rule 1, but an override to rule 2. Expert players will use their first few discards to go fishing. Anyone who bites is giving away vital information. For a full explanation, check out my notes on 'misleading'.

Rule 4 - Don't speculate

Don't pick up a second card hoping to get the third later. This is Kalooki suicide! Only speculate with a poor hand, and then only for a few turns before you start to play defensively.
